HBO “Real Time” host Bill Maher, a noted liberal, clashed with a panel of guests on his show Friday night during a discussion about this week’s Islamic terror attack in London, which the Islamic State has claimed credit for.
During the discussion, panelist Louise Mensch, a former British MP, slammed British “partisans” for blaming the attack on the influx of Muslim migrants and refugees. She essentially implied that the attack had nothing to do with Islam.
But Maher was having none of it.
“Let’s not pretend that [the attack] has nothing to do with Islam, the religion,” he told Mensch.
She hit back and said this week’s attack had as much to do with Islam as Timothy McVeigh’s 1995 Oklahoma City bombing had to do with “Roman Catholicism.”
Maher shot back saying Mensch’s comparison is a “false equivalency.”
“Every time some bomb goes off, before it goes off, somebody yells ‘Allahu Akbar,'” Maher said. “I never heard anyone go ‘Merry Christmas, this one’s for the flying nun.'”
All four members of Maher’s panel disagreed with him, but he was unrelenting.
“Are there Christian terrorist armies like ISIS,” Maher asked. MSNBC host Chris Hayes, one of the members of Friday’s panel, suggested the IRA, a paramilitary Irish group designated as a terrorist organization by Britain, was one, but Maher quickly noted that there’s no current Christian terrorist organization.
“Are there Christian terrorist armies like ISIS, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, al-Shabaab. Are there armies like that in the world that aren’t Muslim?” Maher asked again.
Mensch began to stutter an answer, while Hayes and the other panelists were silent.
“Let’s not f**k around with this anymore,” Maher said. “Can we please get real.”
