Watch: Leftist believes $15 minimum wage won’t kill jobs for an incredible reason
During a $15 minimum wage raise protest at the Massachusetts State House, protest organizer Carlha Toussaint of the Coalition of Social Justice was asked by American Rising Squared if any jobs would be lost as a result of the minimum businesses must pay their employees being raised so high.
Her response was nothing short of breathtaking.
“No, because jobs are currently lost to low wages either way, so raising the minimum wage, you can’t export retail, you can’t export fast food, you can’t export jobs that have to do with, you know, personal customer-based skills, so therefore I don’t believe those type of jobs will be shipped overseas,” responded Toussaint.
In light of recent news surrounding McDonald’s and their rollout of self-service kiosks replacing fast food workers in cities that have raised their minimum wage to $15 an hour, this statement not only myopic, it wildly misses the mark. She is correct in saying that fast food jobs will not be shipped overseas, but jobs will be lost when corporations decide to replace workers with kiosks that do not require a human present.
“For the record, an August study from Heritage found that a $15/hr minimum wage would eliminate 101,000 jobs in Massachusetts and 7 million across the country,” Jeremy Alder of ARS told The Blaze. “Clearly, this organizer doesn’t understand that just because jobs can’t be exported overseas doesn’t mean they can’t be exported to automation, more part-time workers, fewer hours etc.”
